Description
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basic grammar, orthography, vocabulary, and elements of style of classical Japanese (bungo). Although the study of grammatical rules and patterns is necessary, emphasis will be on acquiring a familiarity with bungo through the use of annotated texts. Texts for the course will be a selection of excerpts from literary and historical works of the Heian and Kamakura periods.

Prerequisite
Japanese 42 or 43, or permission of the instructor.

Grades
Performance will be evaluated according the the following scale:
Class performance, written assignments, translations = 60%
Examinations (one mid-term, one final) = 40%
Class performance (including homework and attendance) -- 30%
Unexcused absences will be penalized when calculating the final grade.

Texts
A photocopied packet of materials, including reading selections, grammar notes, and written exercises, will be made available for purchase. In addition students must acquire a copy of a classicial Japanese dictionary, preferably Iwanami's Kogo jiten.
