Description
This course is designed for advanced students to familiarize them with the styles of writing most frequently encountered in Japanese narrative and expository writing from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Texts for the course will be selected from a range of materials: short fiction, essays, and excerpts from historical and scholarly works. Special emphasis will be given to an examination of changes in orthographic conventions and to the movement for reform of the written language aimed at achieving a standard style that more closely reflects developments in the spoken vernacular.

Prerequisite
Japanese 42 or 43, or permission of the instructor.

Requirements
Attendance and preparation are the most important requirements for this course. Language acquisition is a matter of practicing skills on a daily basis. This is not a "content" course, so you cannot cram for it. You must be willing to work together both inside and outside of class. It is better to prepare and make mistakes than not prepare and be unable to participate. Four unexcused absences will result in the loss of a full letter grade. If you miss class more than four times your grade is at the mercy of the instructor.

Texts
Photocopied materials will be made available.
