Classes will be devoted primarily to close reading of selected articles, essays and short stories and to discussions based on videotaped materials. Prerequisite Japanese41 or 42 or permission of the instructor Requirements Attendance and preparation are the most important requirements for this course. Language acquisition is a matter of practicing skills on a daily basis. This is not a "content" course, so you cannot cram for it. You must be willing to work together both inside and outside of class. It is better to prepare and make mistakes than not prepare and be unable to participate. Four unexcused absences will result in the loss of a full letter grade. If you miss class more than four times your grade is at the mercy of the instructor.Attendance and preparation are the most important requirements for this course. Grades Grades will be determined according to the following criteria: Tests -- 60% Kanji Quizzes -- 10% Class performance (including homework and attendance) -- 30%       homework 15%       performance 10%       attendance 5% These are rough percentages, and I will be flexible in assessing final marks.
