Description
Japanese 41 is designed to provide practice in all four language skills at an advanced level. Classes will be devoted primarily to close reading of selected articles, essays and short stories and to discussions based on videotaped materials
Note: although the materials used in this course differ from the materials used in Japanese 33, the general level of proficiency required to enroll in either Japanese 33 or 41 is roughly equivalent. Students may take Japanese 41 even if they have been unable to enroll in Japanese 33.

Prerequisite
Third year Japanese or permission of the instructor

Requirements
Attendance and preparation are the most important requirements for this course. Language acquisition is a matter of practicing skills on a daily basis. This is not a "content" course, so you cannot cram for it. You must be willing to work together both inside and outside of class. It is better to prepare and make mistakes than not prepare and be unable to participate. Four unexcused absences will result in the loss of a full letter grade. If you miss class more than four times your grade is at the mercy of the instructor.

Grades
Grades will be determined according to the following criteria:
  • Tests -- 60%
  • Kanji Quizzes -- 10%
  • Class performance (including homework and attendance) -- 30%
          homework 10%
          performance 20%
These are rough percentages, and I will be flexible in assessing final marks.

Texts
Photocopied materials will be made available.
