Wednesday Night Ride

The Wednesday Night Ride-- Known by some as "The Hate Ride." Some Dartmouth riders refuse to participate. Others are addicted to it.

Leaves 5:15-5:30pm-ish from the parking lot across from the Hanover Bridge (on the Vermont Side).

The route is somewhat variable, but usually involves going around Lake Morey. Traditionally, the group warms up together at a reasonable pace till the intersection with 113, then the shit hits the fan.

This ride will bring out some of the fastest riders in the Upper Valley, and as a result invariably ends up being quite fast. Dropped riders usually are not waited for.

Protagonists that usually show up (year 2006):

  • Mike Barton: dartmouth engineering grad school alum. Currently works at Creare. When he rode for the Dartmouth cycling team, he was sick nasty, winning Velonew's Collegiate Cyclist of the Year. Currently rides for Boston Scientific, and is still very fast.

  • Mike Barton's Boston Scientific teammate (forgot his name): also fast.

  • Ben Silverfarb (sp?): Leaves in Norwich, has a sick-nasty blinged-out Parlee. Rides for VeloEuropa. A small guy, very fast. Won the pro GSMR RR at one point.

  • Mark Nathy: dartmouth alum. Moved back to the Upper Valley recently. Likes to eat meat.

  • Paul the dentist: also fast. Rides for Onion River sports. Races masters. Used to be a pro??

  • Mr. Cox: pretty much the ride leader, usually ends up setting the route.

  • Chris Schmidt: Dartmouth alum, current Harvard Law School student. Was a top-level rower back in the day. Impressive results include 10th overall at the Mt. Washington HillClimb 2005.
(late spring 2006 edit: Chris broke his femur at the Auburn RR, he will not be riding for sometime. I hope for a speedy and full recovery...)

Summer 2006 Edit: The WNR seems to have died for some reason. It has not been occuring. Oh, the humanity.

the pathetic remnants of a late summer 2006 WNR. Mark Nathy is doing his best impression of a speed skater to minimize the pain of a broken rib.
