Nationals 2006

A quick and dirty race report:

Friday: the TTT

Flat and crazy crazy windy. On a closed highway. The course was not to our liking.

2 ways to get the same result:

  • Girls: ride really fast, but miss start by 2 minutes
  • Guys: don't miss start, ride really slow

Note the distinct lack of aero equipment, save for the sweet Zipp disks (well, except for Matt, because the stupid cassette wouldn't go on it)

This photo is actually a bit misleading, as the girls are in fact racing to get to their start. Jenna claimed that her booties would be featured in Velonews--she was right. (Photos from Kansas local Josh Gray)

Highlight of the day: Rudy did the port-o-potty equivalent of a leap of faith: he pooed without seeing if there was any TP (hey rudy: when no one is in line for the john, it means there's no TP). Here is Rudy waddling back to the john. In the end, he managed not to have a 150mph speedmark on his chammy, or so he claims.

Saturday: the RR

A nice 28mile loop around a reservoir. Pretty damn flat, pretty damn windy (sensing a pattern?). The Dartmouth team did quite well on the women's and men's front. Of note was alum Todd Yezefski's second place finish. Both races were marred with crashes, which made absolutely no sense considering that there were no technical corners, and the whole road was closed. In the girl's race, a very nasty crash with ~4 miles to go neutralized the race for an hour. Jenna had a learning experience during that time: don't wipe with poison ivy.

Girls before the start

The reservoir in the distance.

Saturday Night: the Banquet The only thing of note was todd and teammate's sweet costumes. As someone put it, they were "man-pretty."

Sunday: the Crit

The crit was a really sweet 8 corner loop through downtown lawrence. As the race announcer put it "20% chance of rain, 100% chance of pain."

Toby pre-riding the course (the race started at 7am, by the way).

Isn't there a fairytale about the pea and the princess? Rudy?

Pech in the fetal position... on the airport floor. Everyone was sleepy. Pech did something about it.
