Cross Nationals 2006

Thanks to Kevin for the sweet race reports!

Jen, Toby and Kevin on the Omnium Podium.

Saturday

Dartmouth had 3.5 riders racing today, Jen in the collegiate/U23 women's race, Toby and I in the men's U23 race, and Arielle Filiberti (A dartmouth '11) in the women's U23 race as well.

Toby rode a great race to finish 8th in a very very strong U23 field. New Englanders Jesse Anthony and Jamey Driscoll were 1st and 4th, respectively. I finished 15th, directly behind 4 TIAA-CREF dudes. Sweet, they must have been teamworking or something.

Arielle rode a phenomenal race to finish 2nd place int he women's U23 field.

And now for the BESTEST news of the day:

Dartmouth '09 Jennifer Stebbins WON the DII Collegiate Women's race (4th collegiate woman overall) and simultaneously rode to a wonderful 4th in the U23 race. To clear up any confusion, after just her first season of cross racing, Jen won herself a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP STARS 'n STRIPES JERSEY!!! Congrats Jen on a great race and a beautiful new jersey!

Tomorrow is the collegiate men's race with Toby and I starting. Wish us luck!

Sunday

One more update for everyone. Toby and I competed in Sunday's collegiate men's race, and we had a lot to live up to after Jen's race on saturday. As ECCC conference champion, Toby started 1st row and got a great start, 2nd wheel through the first set of barriers. I started farther back and spent a couple of laps working my through as much of the field as I could.

Toby had a great race to finish 6th overall, 3rd for D2 racers. Jamey Driscoll, UVM rider and vermont native, won impressively in front of Troy Wells, Joey Thompson, Bjorn Selander, Toby, and other U23 hotshots. I worked my way up the field for a bit until I settled into a group eventually fighting for 10th-12th, then misread the sprint horribly and finished 12th overall, 5th D2 rider. Good race nonetheless, and incredibly fun.

So, Dartmouth had two riders on the men's individual D2 podium, and ended up 2nd overall among D2 teams. MIT, despite lacking any stand-out performances, won the D2 overall title and a bunch of perty jerseys due to their (to paraphrase steve-o) precisely calculated number of riders.

Dartmouth grad student Ed Meyer unfortunately missed the collegiate race because of a registration snafu (good word), but raced well in the elite race later that day. Tim Johnson won by many time points.

In the elite women's race, Dartmouth alums Amy Wallace and Kat Carr raced well in a very strong field (duh) to finish 21st and 58th, respectively.

THANKS KEVIN!
