• Does Dartmouth have a good cycling team?

If by “good,” you mean incredibly fast and devilishly good looking, than yes! We do! In all seriousness, Dartmouth does have a very solid group of committed bike racers, from weekend warrior students to Cat 1s who race year-round and have won national championships. Just a few of our proud accomplishments:

  • Dartmouth was ranked SECOND in the Division II National Collegiate Cycling Team rankings for 2006-2007.
  • We placed second at Collegiate Road Nationals Omnium in 2007 and second at Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals Omnium in 2006.
  • Individually, Dartmouth riders have scored wins at collegiate road nationals, the easterns crit and collegiate cyclocross nationals in the past year alone.

So we like to race… fast. But, just as importantly, we have a fun time doing it. We are always excited when people who might not have a lot of experience get on a bike and give racing a try. Collegiate racing is a great place to start.

• Is the cycling team a varsity sport?

The Dartmouth cycling team is not considered a varsity sport. Collegiate cycling has been deemed “too cool” for the NCAA (for many reasons, so I hear) so Dartmouth officially calls us a club sport, but that term might be deceiving.

• What is the ECCC and why is Dartmouth Division II?

Collegiate Cycling is divided up into 10 regional conferences. Dartmouth is a proud member of the ECCC, or the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference. The ECCC is home to just over 90 collegiate teams, who are divided up into Division I and Division II, based on the size of the school. Because Dartmouth is a relatively small school, we are considered Division II. During the regular season, Division I and II teams compete against each other, with no distinction. The divisions are broken up during national events.

• Is there a coach I can talk to?

The Dartmouth cycling team does not have a full time, official coach. This past spring, we were fortunate enough to have the directorship of alum (and pro!) Todd Yezefski ’04. If you are looking to talk with someone about Dartmouth cycling, the best way to reach us is at our email address – cteam@dartmouth.edu.

• Can I be recruited for cycling?

Because Dartmouth cycling is not a varsity sport, there is no official recruitment process. But don’t be fooled! The cycling team has – and will! – write letters of recommendation for qualified cyclists who’d like to come to Hanover and race. We have seen success with these recommendations in the past, especially as the cycling team has grown and become a solid part of the college. Send us your race resume and a bit about yourself and we’ll see what we can do!
