Editing Guide

Background

This is a Wiki. In case you were wondering, that is the Hawaiian word for quick. The cool thing with a wiki, is that any member can contribute to the site. If no one put up an official race report on the Cycling Team Home Page, here you can tell the world about your amazing victory, near victory, almost near victory, or crazy attack off the back (humiliating defeat). You can also post your favorite rides, upload snazzy photos, and put your palmarès in your Bio.

Some of this stuff may be somewhat confusing, especially since I do stuff like talk about where to put a page before I say how to make a page. Don't despair, just keep reading. Then try some stuff. If you want some help, just ask me.

Wiki Organization

This Wiki has 8 sections: Main, Rides, Profiles, Races, Other, Members Only, Site, and PmWiki. The first 5 can be viewed by anyone, but only people with accounts can edit. The one exception is that the Bios in Profiles can only be edited by their owner. Members Only can only be read or edited by members. PmWiki contains the documentation for the software that the site runs on, and can be viewed by anyone but only edited by administrators. Site contains much of the behind the scenes software interface (and the SideBar). Access is similarly restricted.

I'd like to keep this site reasonably organized, so here is what I suggest. The Main section is for news and very general information. Rides, Profiles, and Races are self explanatory. Other, as you may have guessed, is for information that isn't general enough for Main. Unless it's really important, put in in other.

So, when making a new page, first link to it from the base page of the section, and then from the home page if it's really cool. For example, if you want to make a page on the 2006 Boston Bean Pot, first link to it from the Races page, and then put a link and a blurb on the Home Page.

Editing

Changing a page that already exists

You can start off editing any page by clicking the "Edit" link at the top or bottom of the page. It's probably a good idea to go to some pages, hit Edit, and see what the code looks like. However, before you start making changes, I suggest you play in the Wiki Sandbox to get a better idea of how to do things. The code isn't that complicated, and there are lots of examples on Basic Editing.

The first real page you'll probably want to edit is your bio. It should have been created and linked to from Roster before you received your account information. I recommend you use the Example Bio as a template. Be sure to look at both the code and the page so you get a sense of how it works.

In order to upload a photo, hit the "Attach" button at the top of the screen. Hit the "browse" button to select the file from your computer, and give it a name (aka "mypicture.jpg"). Be sure that this file name has not already been used -- a list of existing uploads can be found at the bottom of the uploads page. If this becomes a problem, tell me. I can set it up so that the uploads for different pages are stored in different folders.

After a photo is loaded, just use Attach:mypicture.jpg, like in the example. Note that names are case sensitive, so Attach:MYpicture.jpg will not show the "mypicture.jpg".

Making a new page

Start by going to the base page for the section you want to post in, like Rides. Hit edit and and add [[Rides/Awesome Ride]], where Awesome Ride is the name of the ride, and the initial Rides/ tells the wiki under what section to store the page you're going to make. Save the page and view it. You should see page name with a ? after it (like NonexistentPages?). Click that link and you'll be brought to the editing screen for your new page. Edit, hit save, and you're done. Afterwards, if you put [[Rides/Awesome Ride]] elsewhere, it will link to that page (it won't have a ? because the page will have been created). Spiffy, no?

Thumbnail Gallery

For the documentation on how to play with images, look at Images. I'll find a cleaner way to make thumbnails later, but for the moment take a look at this table:

There's more than one way to make a table, see also Tables.
