Michelle de Sousa, 2008Meet Michelle “Meesh” de Sousa: Coordinator for the Sexual Abuse Awareness Program here at Dartmouth College.
de Sousa earned her B.A. at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and has a master's degree in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from Springfield College.
de Sousa joins our staff from the University of San Francisco, where she held the position of a Residence Hall Director for an all-female residence hall. Because of her passion around issues of sexual and relationship violence, de Sousa received her certification as a Rape Crisis Counselor from San Francisco Women Against Rape, the city’s rape crisis center.
Working to raise awareness around women’s issues, reproductive rights, sexual violence, domestic violence, and body image has been a passion and part of her life for many years. de Sousa has enjoyed providing educational and fun programming for students, staff, and faculty during her higher education journey which includes her undergraduate, graduate, and professional experiences.
de Sousa has volunteered and worked at a variety of Women’s Resource Centers where she was able to partake in events such as the Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night, the Clothesline Project, and group discussions around a variety of topics affecting women. She also sat on the President’s Advisory Council on the Status of Women at the University of San Francisco. She currently is a member of the ACPA Standing Committee for Women and the NASPA Women in Student Affairs committee.
When asked why de Sousa chose this work, she said “I do it as a way to pay it forward to those who have brought me to where I am today. Without their support and faith in me, I’m not sure if I would be here to support, embrace, and advocate for the students of Dartmouth.” “It is an honor to be a part of a survivor’s healing process, no matter what that looks like.”
