How does having a child or children effect my options with regard to College housing?
There is no special arrangement to subsidize housing costs for students with children. Students who receive financial aid, which includes a housing allotment, can use that portion of their aid to cover the costs of off-campus housing. Parenting students are eligible for housing at Sachem Village. Housing assignments for units at Sachem Village begin in May, the units rent quickly, and turnover throughout the year is minimal. In addition, the Rental Housing office gives priority to helping people with children find affordable rental housing. Parenting students with questions or concerns about housing should contact Dean of Residential Life Martin Redman (646-2399).
How will being pregnant or being a parent effect my Dartmouth Student Health plan?
- Students who choose to carry a pregnancy to term need to comply with the notification requirement below in order to avoid having their benefits reduced.
- Pregnancy termination is covered, up to $350, under the student health plan. If a student is 18 years of age, or older, participation in the health plan is activated through a contract with the student, therefore documentation related to termination services received through the plan are sent directly to the student (not her parents). For more information about costs and providers, contact the Women's Health Program at Dick's House.
- Students have the option of adding a child or children to their policy as a dependent. o Visit http://www.dartmouth.edu/~health/dsghp/PlanBooklet01-02.pdf for the complete text of the student health plan policies.
Maternity Notification Requirement
You are required to call the health care management program's toll free number (1-800-348-1313) during the first trimester of pregnancy or upon enrollment in the Health Care Management Program. At this time, a Registered Nurse will ask you questions about your general health and medical history. This information will be discussed with your physician and will help determine the risk factor of your pregnancy.
If your pregnancy is classified as low risk, you will have satisfied the maternity notification requirement. You will only need to call again when you are admitted to the hospital for delivery. If your pregnancy is classified as moderate or high risk, the healthcare management program will follow your case, recommend specialists and/or facilities when applicable and coordinate communications among health care providers, patients and others.
If you call the health care management program as outlined above, benefits will be unaffected, and you and the plan avoid expenses related to unnecessary health care. However, if you do not call, the plan's co-payment will be reduced by $1000 for all covered expenses incurred by the mother which are directly related to the delivery, including physician and hospital or facility expenses, after any applicable deductible.
