The Child Care Project

This umbrella organization is a regional clearinghouse of childcare options (public, private, home and preschool settings). Child Care Project staff assist parents in choosing child care by:

  • providing advice about what to look for in choosing child care, and help in deciding what the best kind of care is for each family;
  • providing referrals to specific child care programs which might fit the family's needs; and
  • assisting parents with any problems they may have as child care consumers.

Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD)

Part of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, CHaD was recognized in 1992 as a "children's hospital within a hospital" by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, Inc. CHaD is one of 96 children's hospitals in the United States providing care specifically focused for children. Their programs include a free parenting lecture series, as well as:

  • The Child Life Program promotes optimum development of children, adolescents, and their families to minimize psychological trauma. The program provides opportunities for developmental stimulation, support during stressful procedures, and advocacy for children's emotional and psychological needs.
  • DAVID'S HOUSE offers a comfortable home-away-from-home for children receiving treatment through CHaD. Children aren't medical patients or motel guests at David's House; they are part of their own family in a quality home-like atmosphere. When the child cannot leave the Medical Center, David's House is for the families of these children--a retreat where they can stay to find, and give, support to their child and to each other.

Good Beginnings

Good Beginnings aims to create a caring environment with families, communities, service agencies and governments working together so that all children can have a good beginning. The Good Beginnings volunteer home visiting program is a free service to parents with babies or small children. It works by linking trained volunteers with a new parent who would like to have someone to talk to about raising their children. The volunteers are recruited from within the area in which they will be operating and they are supervised and supported by a professional coordinator. In addition to providing a caring person to answer questions regarding maternal and child health, volunteers provide respite child care, entertain siblings, assist with light housekeeping and meal preparation, offer information and referrals regarding community resources, provide transportation to appointments, and connect families served with each other if so desired.
