Applying for and Obtaining an Internship

An internship differs from a "job" in that an internship is a "learning" experience. As an intern, you may be offered responsibilities typically reserved for experienced individuals. Following are essential tools for your internship search:

  • Internship Search Strategies
  • MonsterTRAK - A database of several thousand, ongoing internships.  Search by geographic location, career category and key word.  Be sure to register your career interests in the "Career Services Desired" part of the profile so that you receive specialized emails directly from Career Services.
  • Funding for Unpaid Internships - Provides information on a number of grants sponsored by Dartmouth.
  • Alumni Advisory Network - A database in Career Services of over 13,000 alumni career advisors who have offered to give you information on their career path and advice on strategizing your internship search.
  • Career Search Database - Located in Career Services, Career Search is a searchable database that identifies companies and organizations based on different fields such as industry, location (national and international), and/or keyword. It provides an organization's basic information so that you can contact potential employers and inquire directly about opportunities through an exploratory job search letter (see "Job Search Letters" Handout). Career Search also has an internship listing section, salary wizard, and more.

More Internship Listings

Career Services offers many resources to augment an internship search including job newsletters, professional journals, and specialized directories.  Many internships are not advertised in publications or databases, so be willing to directly ask an employer directly about opportunities.  Make an appointment to speak with a career advisor to identify the best resources for your particular interests and search and set up an action plan tailored to your schedule.

Be sure to also use your "network" of contacts – family, friends, faculty, previous employers, high school friends, neighbors, etc. in addition to the Dartmouth Alumni Advisory Network and other alumni professional associations such as the Dartmouth Lawyer's Association and Alums for Social Change.

Helpful sites with internship listings include:

  • Career Information - Provides links to internship listings and more.
  • Idealist.org - Posts opportunities with not-for-profit organizations (social, economic justice, environment, advocacy, etc.).
  • NACElink - NACElink Connect is an online, national job board for college students looking for all types of employment, including full-time and part-time jobs, internships, cooperative education positions, and volunteer and summer work.
  • Princeton Review - Searchable database of internships.
  • The Riley Guide
  • Rising Star Internships
