Capturing Course Lectures

According to Lee Witters, Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences, “the life of a professor is the life of a teacher, and that teaching responsibility doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom.” Witters teaches introductory biology to some 200 students who range in experience from first-years to seniors, from students with 8th grade biology to biology majors. To help a group of diverse learners master a large body of facts, Witters captures his course lectures and posts them online.

Learn more about why and how Witters and others capture lectures.

Teaching with Information Technology—Winter 2007

For several years, Academic Computing and the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) have been teaming up each term to offer a Teaching with Information Technology luncheon, with three to five presenters demonstrating their use of information technology in support of teaching. These luncheons, affectionately known as TWITs, have proved to be quite popular. Participants enjoy the opportunity to learn from their colleagues, and often leave with new ideas for incorporating technology tools into their teaching practice. In fact, these sessions have proven so successful that we decided to bring TWITs to the web for general consumption, featuring:

Discovering at Thayer School

Marvin Doyley, Research Assistant Professor at Thayer School of Engineering, is part of Keith Paulson’s alternative breast imaging team that is working on techniques that may one day allow earlier detection and classification of breast tumors. Utilizing the resources of the Discovery cluster has allowed Doyley to reduce job runtimes from one week down to four hours. In assessing the impact that more computational resources has had on his research, Doyley is quite clear about the impact the of Discovery: “Discovery gives us a lead. It allows us to be more competitive.”
