If I live in Vermont will state tax automatically be withheld?

  • Dartmouth College will not automatically withhold Vermont state taxes. You can request this be withheld on your behalf by submitting the Employee Information Form to EIS/Payroll.

If I previously had Vermont tax withheld and change my address to New Hampshire, will Vermont Tax stop being withheld?

What is Form W-4?

  • Form W-4 tells an employer how many withholding allowances to use when deducting Federal Income Tax from an employee's pay. Form W-4 includes detailed instructions, and a worksheet to help the employee figure his or her correct number of withholding allowances.

My pay stub shows my marital status as single, what is this for?

  • The marital status on your pay stub indicates how you are claiming on your Form W-4.

What happens if I didn't submit a Form W-4?

  • Your taxation status will default to Single with zero allowances.

How often can I change my Form W-4 ?

  • The Form W-4 can be changed as many times through out the year as you find necessary. Once Form W-4 has been submitted to the EIS/Payroll Office, you should monitor your pay stub to verify the change has been processed. This information will be recorded on your stub in the upper left hand corner, titled TAX DATA.

How do I claim exemption from Federal Tax?

  • Submit the Form W-4 with exempt written on line 7, please be sure to leave line 5 blank. The IRS has strict guidelines for claiming exemption from withholding. For further information, please visit the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov/ and see Publication 505.

Who do I submit Form W-4 to?

  • Form W-4 must be submitted to the Payroll Office at Hinman Box 6161.

I am an enrolled student and noticed no Social Security or Medicare taxes were withheld from my check, is this correct?

  • This is correct; enrolled students do not have to pay Social Security or Medicare taxes.

I am a student on leave term, will I have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes?

  • Exemption from Social Security and Medicare taxes applies only to students who are currently enrolled, therefore you will have these taxes withheld.

Can the EIS/Payroll Office offer tax guidance?

  • The EIS/Payroll Office can not offer tax guidance on the proper withholding status for employees. This information may be obtained from an accountant or by researching the IRS documentation found at http://www.irs.gov/.
