Funkhouser is a module of Dartmouth College's Endowment Fund System (EFS); a subsidiary accounting system for endowment funds, which provides on-line viewing access to endowment fund descriptions, legal restrictions, donor intentions, financial information and accounting histories of the College's more than 4,700 active endowment funds. Funkhouser is intended to provide quick access to summarized endowment fund information that would otherwise require significant research. It is used extensively by the College's Development Offices and Financial Offices; including departmental Fiscal Officers with accountability for the many functional areas that benefit from endowment distributions.
The name Funkhouser honors Robert D. Funkhouser, Comptroller of Dartmouth College from 1950 - 1966. At the direction of John F. Meck, Treasurer of Dartmouth College between 1949 and 1969, Robert Funkhouser compiled and edited a book titled Dartmouth College: Endowment and Plant Fund Register. This book, which was published in 1969, was a revision and expansion of an earlier work published by Halsey C. Edgerton, Treasurer of the College between 1916 and 1949. The purpose of both books was to describe "… all information necessary for a complete understanding and an intelligent administration of the various funds, thereby making it possible to carry out the intentions of the donors" *
At the time of publication of the initial Funkhouser register, 1,979 endowment and plant funds existed, with a June 30, 1969 market value of $180,408,000. When Edgerton retired as Treasurer at June 30, 1949, 616 endowment and plant funds existed with a market value of $34,324,000. As of June 30, 2000, over 4,700 endowment funds existed with a market value of $2,490,376,000.
Funkhouser access is available to individuals who are employed at Dartmouth College and have administrative, fundraising or financial responsibilities involving endowment funds, If you are interested in gaining access to Funkhouser, please contact the Endowment Administration Office at Dartmouth by telephone at (603) 646-3044 or by e-mail to endowment.administration@dartmouth.edu.
