Spectacle and Exhibitionism

This course explores cultural theory (the public sphere; spectacle; display; ideology; collective memory)  through examples drawn from the history of World Fairs.  Nation-based gatherings of international scope, the fairs (1855-1964) brought millions of visitors to urban settings; organizers sought to both awe and persuade.  The fairs support a wide range of theoretical and historical research topics related to race, empire, gender, politics, science, technology, advertising, visual arts, architecture, museums, academic disciplines, literature, film studies, etc.
