Legacy Public UNIX Workstations

The Northstar workstations (SGI O2) and SunRay terminal appliances are a legacy set of public UNIX workstations distributed around campus. They are no longer maintained and will be retired as their utility to the hosting departments ceases. There are workstations remaining in Kresge Library, Fairchild Tower (Physics), and Berry Library.

All share common user names, passwords, and home directories (stored in AFS). Available software includes mathematical and engineering software, compilers and development tools, Internet tools, graphics and multimedia tools, and productivity tools.

Accounts

All home directories are stored on central file servers (AFS), so that the same files are visible to each computer. There is also temporary scratch space local to each computer. No backups are made of local disks on the workstations.

All accounts in AFS are backed up on a regular schedule as a protection against accidental destruction of files. However, backup files are not kept indefinitely. For more details, see File Backups.

For information on AFS accounts and usage policies, see AFS Account and Usage Policies.

Help

If you have questions about the UNIX environment or problems with the Research Computing/AFS systems, send e-mail to the system administrator at admin@northstar. Also see our Frequently Asked Questions for Researchers.
