Severe Weather Policy

A severe weather plan has been created to accommodate holding a Commencement ceremony indoors if the forecast weather makes holding an outdoor ceremony too dangerous. The ceremony will be held outdoors if it is merely raining, but in the highly unlikely case of lightning, hail, or dangerously high winds, the severe weather plan will be implemented.

Determination of Severe Weather:

Any determination to implement the severe weather plan will be communicated to all graduating students via email on Saturday before the ceremony.

After the Determination:

If the severe weather plan is implemented, the Commencement ceremony will be held in Leede Arena. Because it is a smaller venue than the Green, admission will be granted only to bachelor and advanced degree candidates.

  • All students will receive four Remote Viewing Tickets when they pick up their cap and gown.
  • Tickets will become necessary ONLY in the unlikely event that we enact our severe weather plan and move the ceremony to Leede Arena. Otherwise, these tickets will not be used.
  • The remote viewing tickets will provide access for up to four guests per student to view the ceremony on large viewing screens in the venue printed on the ticket. We also encourage family and guests to view the live ceremony broadcast online from their hotels.
  • Lost tickets cannot be replaced
  • We cannot issue more than four remote viewing tickets per student, as remote viewing seating is very limited
  • Guests must go to the venue printed on their ticket; exchanges are not permitted

Family Members Without a Remote Viewing Ticket:

We realize that this equitable ticketing system may leave some families with fewer tickets than desired. If weather conditions are severe enough to move the ceremony indoors, some family members may prefer to remain in the comfort of a home, residence hall, or hotel. The following are alternative viewing options for all guests, including those without a severe weather ticket:

  • Live online webcast at (a link will be posted that day)
  • Local access television CATV 2 or CATV 8 (local hotels & homes)
  • On DarTV (in residence halls; see hall clerk for location of TV within the cluster)
  • Tuesday after the ceremony, a video of the webcast will be available at
