wendy simon: Topic 7: Are There Limits to Science?

Group 7 addressed the question of limits
to science?
Unfortunately, i had to leave early so I
did not get
to hear each group member speak. However,
from what I
did hear, there were a few things that
struck me. The
being talked down to. Rather, I felt that
the group gave me their honest conclusions
from what they had learned. In my opinion
the answer does not have to be black and
white. We do not have to decide whether
we agree with realists or contextualists.
There has to be some grey area. While I
cannot say that there is no limit to
finite amount of knowledge. For me,
there is a middle ground. I believe that
there is a limit to what we will learn in
science, but that does not mean that
there is a finite amount of knowledge.
We, as humans, have no way of knowing
these things, it is beyond us, but it is
my belief that this ties into the idea of
science and religion. I believe that we
will learn as much as God wants us to. I
do not believe that this will be
everything there is to learn. I like the
idea of the ray because it fits what we
know now. There are some disciplines
where we have learned all there is, but
other areas are still mysteries to us.
The example of the origin of the universe
is a hard topic. It shows the second
case, since no human was there for the
origin, humans cannot find out what
exactly happened. There are many
theories, but they are just that,
theories. It is a scientists job to try
to prove these theories, but this is one
area where we can find no conclusive
proof now.
In conclusion, there are limits to what
humans can learn, or know, but whether or
not there are limits is another question.
One that I am not prepared to answer.
While I missed the discussion (if there
was one) I still felt that the
presentation was engaging and I was very
impressed with the material.
