Jared Fry: Topic 7: Are There Limits to Science? I felt that group seven did a wonderful job in explaining the deep subject of limits in science. Though everyone has their own theories to this subject, I felt that group seven kept their presentation very neutral. I too had my own opinion coming into this presentation, yet it was slightly changed by the groups deeper ideas. I am curious though how someone can call science limited when not everything is known. It is like saying that numbers are limited. The only true way you can test this is to start counting. We just say that numbers go on to infinity because of logic, but we don’t really know for sure. I am not saying that science is limited, but I am definitely not saying it is. How can we know everything about everything. We would need to in order to say that science was limited. It seems that you would be able to always find something to study. For instance, because it appears there is no limit to numbers, than isn’t it impossible for chemistry to never be limited. You could mix substances in an infinite different number of ratios to get different effects. You truly wouldn’t know all of the effects until you tried them all. But it is impossible to try them all because there are an infinite amount of possibilities. We are coming up with our own elements now. What is to stop us from making an infinite number of elements? How are we to know if there are limits to this? Many of the groups analogies seemed very accurate, especially the one about the ray. I a not sure if science is limited or not, although I feel it is less limited than not limited. I also agree that there is some science that is not fully unlimited nor is it limited. I do feel that it is possible for some science to be limited by certain factors and not others. At this point, because there has been no great discoveries dealing with limitations, if it is ever possible to make discoveries on this topic, it is impossible to have an assertive or even persuasive discussion on this topic. |
