Library Science
The collection in library science supports the needs of the librarians for library and information science reference tools as well as materials for instructional programs presented by the library staff. In addition, it provides books and serial publications relating to library and personnel management and materials for continuing professional education. Its particular aim is to support the projects of immediate interest to the librarians.
Dartmouth College does not offer courses of instruction in library science. Bibliographical instruction on the use of library materials in various disciplines as well as general information on the effective use of the "tools" of the library are routinely offered throughout the library system.
The collection aims at covering the broad aspects of library and information science including administration, conservation, technical and public services, automation, library history and biography, as well as specific interests in these fields.
The major portion of the collection is shelved in the Baker Library stacks. Materials limited to the special interests of the associated libraries are cataloged for the appropriate library. Titles relating to conservation and preservation are located in the Special Collections Reference area. There are a significant number of titles which are uncataloged and housed in librarians' offices.
English is the principal language of the collection.
Although no geographic area is excluded, the collection reflects developments in North America and Western Europe.
Principally, monographs and serials are collected, including pertinent bibliographies and reference sources. Materials relating to regional libraries and bulletins and reports of RLG member libraries are collected.
There is no limitation set to the format collected. However, the collection presently exists in either print or microform format. In addition, access is available to various online databases.
See GENERAL SUBJECT BOUNDARIES
The Cook Mathematics Library and Feldberg Library collect materials to support the College's Program in Computer and Information Science as well as computer applications in business and management.
