Chemistry
The collection primarily supports the instructional and research needs of the undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral associates and faculty in Chemistry, as well as serving the needs of visiting scholars from other institutions. Further, the collection provides resources for all levels of research in all science departments of the College. It also supports the instructional and research needs of the Thayer Engineering School and the Dartmouth Medical School.
Research interests of faculty within Chemistry are varied, with work in bioinorganic chemistry, chemical physics, environmental chemistry, chemical carcinogenesis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, organotransition metal chemistry, physical chemistry, physical inorganic chemistry, physical biochemistry and theoretical chemistry.
Programs leading to undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. degrees are offered. In addition, an Honors thesis project opportunity for undergraduate students with a minimum GPA is offered.
In addition, the Studies in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology program (SHAPST), "...provides a curricular and extracurricular focus...seeking to examine the historical, philosophical and social traditions that have shaped the construction of science and technology, and the effects of science and technology on other intellectual, social and political activities." (Organization, Regulations and Courses, September, 1990, p. 541 ). SHAPST is not a formal department and does not grant a major or degree; "...rather, it identifies a core of Dartmouth faculty...interested in the history, philosophy or social relations of science and technology, and the interdisciplinary courses they offer in these areas." (ibid) In chemistry, Chemistry 63: Environmental Chemistry, is the offered course.
Chemistry is the QD classification of the Library of Congress classification scheme and 540-548 of the Dewey system. All Dewey classed material is housed in the Storage Facility, the major portion of the QD material is housed in Kresge Physical Sciences Library. While all Chemical Abstracts classification system sections are represented in the general Dartmouth College Library system, the chemistry collection in Kresge is more oriented to organic and physical chemistry. Some chemistry material is housed in other libraries, based on imprint date (Special Collections), popular treatment
(Baker), duplicate subject treatment (Feldberg, Dana), or major subject treatment other than chemistry (Feldberg, Dana). In the areas of biochemistry, enzymology, protein/peptide chemistry, biophysical chemistry and medicinal chemistry (to name a few), heavy use is made of Dana Biomedical library since the material classes in Dana. In the area of chemical technology, the collection is maintained at Feldberg Business and Engineering Library. In addition, the proceedings and transactions of a number of academies of science and scientific societies (both national and foreign) are often interdisciplinary in nature and are therefore housed in Baker Library, in the Q
section. (Also because at one time, Baker was the only library on campus and all titles were housed there).
English is the predominant language, but no language is excluded.
There are no geographical limitations to the acquisition of chemistry materials.
Monographs, serials, periodicals, theses, indexes and abstracts, bibliographies, society publications, and other standard reference works are purchased in hard-copy, unless storage problems favor a microformat counterpart.
No format is excluded.
There are no Special Collections or Manuscripts specifically related to chemistry within the library system.
For material not collected in chemistry, interlibrary loan is utilized.
