Collection Management & Development Program
Charge to the Collection Management and Development Committee
Composition
Membership consists of all bibliographers and one or more representatives from Acquisitions Seervices, Bibliographic Control Services, and Circulation Services.
Structure
The Collection Management and Development Committee reports to the Librarian of the College and is chaired by the Director of Collection Services. The Committee establishes ad hoc and standing sub-committees as appropriate. A Steering Committee, chaired by the Director of Collection Services, manages the operations of the Committee and coordinates the work of the subgroups.
Purpose
The purpose of the Collection Management and Development Committee is to maintain the library's collection management and development program in support of the curricular, programatic, research, and information needs of the Dartmouth College community, including the following responsibilities:
€Creation and maintenance of collection development policies.
€Development and implementation of principles and methods to guide the evaluation of collections.
€Creation of policies for bibliographic control and access in conjunction with appropriate Technical Services staff and groups.
€Examination of binding and preservation issues as they affect the collection management and development program; maintaining communication with Preservation Services and other Library groups concerned with preservation and collection maintenance.
€Fostering of regional and national efforts in cooperative collection development, such as the Research Libraries Group Collection Management and Development Program.
€Review of materials expenditures on an on-going basis, including the monitoring of economic trends affecting materials expenditures, participation in the development and evaluation of internal financial mangement reports, and the development of plans to manage and allocate funds as appropriate.
€Assistance and support for bibliographers in establishing and maintaining effective communication with their departments.
€Acting in an advisory capacity to the Director of Collection Services in providing information to the Council on Libraries.
