Daily Updates Week Four: 9 October
9 October. Professor Ulrich Reporting:
After several days of gray skies and chilly rain, a glorious high pressure system moved in over Rome on Sunday. While FSP students were putting finishing touches on their first long paper, Romans headed for the great parks on the outskirts of the city. One of the largest is at the Villa Doria Pamphili. The great stands of "umbrella pines" (Pinus pinea) that have been growing in the park for decades are not to be missed!
A view of a pine grove (Italian: "pineta") in the Villa Doria Pamphili Park.
Another "pineta" in the park. The pine cones (pigne) from these trees produce the nuts that are the base ingredient (along with basil) of Rome's famed "pesto" sauce.
A view of the Aventine Hill from the Janiculum Hill in Rome (Oct. 9, 2005). The view is dominated by the villa Priorato di Malta and the church of Santa Maria del Priorato, the headquarters of the Knights of Malta. In the background a clear view of the Alban Hills, where the Trojan refugee Aeneas and his son started the line of kings that would eventually found the city of Rome.
