Week Ten: May 27
27 May: TA Elizabeth and Professor Christesen Reporting: The island of Corfu was full of surprises. Corfu Town was wonderfully European: a lovely combination of Venetian architecture, green parks and excellent cuisine. The town hosts the pedimental sculpture from the Temple of Artemis; the massive Medusa and flanking lions were breathtaking. The island beyond Corfu Town was disappointingly overrun with the worst type of tourism. Hoping for a leisurely drive through the "vegetable garden of Greece" we set out in the rental car only to encounter impatient Greek drivers, tourists on speeding mopeds without helmets and more traffic than downtown Manhattan in rush hour. Who knew?
