Week Seven: May 1
01 May: Kari and Chris Reporting: The day started early with a 5:45am wakeup call, and everyone made it to the bus in one piece, more or less, by 6:20. A short drive took us to the docks at Keramoti and we boarded the early ferry, bus and all, to the island of Thasos. We took a quick quiz and then munched on sack breakfasts, prepared especially for us by the excellent kitchen staff at our hotel in Kavala. We enjoyed a beautiful view of the island in the early morning light from the top deck before disembarking, and our first stop on the island was the Hotel Xenia. After checking in we wandered through the modern city and checked out remains of the old. We made a quick stop at a cape at the end of the island and took in the view, followed by a nice hike to the tops of the city's two acropoleis. We scrambled back down a "secret" staircase and back into the city, where people were putting up wreaths and flower decorations for May Day (a national holiday). After a tour of a couple of sanctuary sites, we were free to grab lunch. The afternoon was filled with marble quarries, suntanning, and swimming (snorkeling, for Prof. Christesen). We returned to the hotel, some of us a little battered, some of us a little bloody, but all of us sunburnt.
