Week Six: April 27
Map for Week 6
27 April: The ISP Week Update: It seems that everyone passed the week in more or less the same way: researching and writing their Independent Study Projects fast and furiously. Some, like Liz and Leslie, headed to the islands for a few days of quiet and some afternoon swimming to break up the day; Liz and Leslie went to Paros while Kari, Melissa, Rebecca and Sarah Jones headed to Naxos. Arriving at 1 in the morning, the girls made quite the scene at port when Kari made a running leap from the edge of the departing boat to the pier, staggering backwards and rolling around due to the heavy pack on her back. Sorry, no digital image for that one! All of the island dwellers found their hotels deserted and welcomed both the peace and quiet and the friendliness of the local Greeks. Some were even given Easter eggs!
For those who stayed in Athens , the Hotel Kouros was the hotel of choice where Randy was lucky enough to have a room that opened onto the roof for sunbathing and study breaks. He was also, however , the unlucky recipient of a room with both a styrofoam ceiling AND a single, bare light bulb hanging from said ceiling which he did not find as delightful as the sundeck. Anais spent a few days at Bruaron’s ClubMed, living in the lap of luxury with French tourists; Brauron however, was “a sketchy place” so after completing her onsite work, she headed for the friendly faces at Hotel Kouros in Athens. Katie spent a few days up north in Thessolonika, looking at the Macedonian palaces. Mike travelled to Laurion to visit the mines and called the experience “fully satisying”; he then chose Hotel Exerkia near Omonia Square to get his writing done. Evan and Sarah Murray joined Mike at the Exerkia; Evan visited a number of museums and wrote fifty pages of detailed notes for his paper. Sarah wrote “frantically” all week, stopping only for walks and food. Chris spent five days in Lamia looking for ship imagery and found it “exciting”. Finally, Ani spent the whole week on Crete in Knossos, up close and personal with the palace and the stray dogs. Everyone was impressed by the public singing, processions and bell ringing brought on by the Easter holiday as well as the three day suspension of all kinds of work. For now, it’s rest and relaxation (as well as prep reading) for tomorrow’s day in the agora here in Athens.
