Week Five: April 16
Map for Week 5
16 April: Ani and Randy Reporting: We were blessed with a slightly later wakeup (9:30) and our first stop was the museum in modern Pylos. We looked at the antiquities and everyone was very excited. Having partaken of their pieces, we went to the Mycenaean palace of Nestor, which was not as big as Mycenae or Tiryns, but much better preserved. We had our *first* quiz of the day and got the tour from Prof. Christesen, after which we went to the Chora Museum, where Prof. Christesen developed an ulcer trying to talk over the cacophony of blaring motors from the nearby street. Inside we did the usual museum routine and bombed out of there (all except one of us) to the beach at Methene, where we spent three hours doing such things as reading the Iliad, writing in our journals, going in the water (for about 3 of us), eating fish, playing baseball with rusty metal pipes, and watching Mike try to climb down the castle. When we got back we had an hour of furiously reading and writing before we took our *second* quiz of the day comparing Pylos and Knossos, then after another hour of dinner and more reading and writing we had our *third* quiz, this time on the Iliad. After the discussion, we all fled to our respective rooms to do more work (in a few cases), pack, and crash.
