Week Three: April 4
4 April: Mike and Sarah Reporting: After a 7:00 breakfast, we walked three blocks to the Siteia museum. The museum’s prized possession was a two-foot tall kouros (statue of a young male) made of hippopotamus ivory. Besides the statue though, the museum’s collection was a little sparse especially compared to those of the British and Herakleion Museums, which spoiled us. Our bus left at 10 for a glorious 2-hour drive through windy mountain roads. When we got to Karphi, a mountain in central Crete, the entire mountainside was covered with a thick fog. The one-hour hike up was pretty strenuous, but we were rewarded with a clear mountain view as the fog cleared. We spent an hour on the summit, looked at the settlement (c. 1000 BCE) there, and enjoyed a delicious lunch in the sun, much better than the rain of the last three days. As we walked down the fog enveloped us once again. We followed the tinkling of sheep’s bells, but they led us astray. Sarah Jones and Michael “Don’t call me a leper” Martinez got everybody back on track and we found the bus. We were a little behind schedule and by the time we got to Gortyn it was closed. Upon arriving in Matala we took a nice swim in the Mediterranean- much warmer than Lake Michigan.
