Week Four: April 12
12 April: Chris and Katie reporting: Today we started off at Megalopolis after leaving Tripolis in the morning. Most of us were awakened at 3 a.m. with a small earthquake (or tremor/aftershock/whatever). The shaking wasn't nearly as bad as the incredible amount of noise a group of Greek schoolkids staying in the hotel with us made as they exited the hotel in the morning. Nonetheless we were all fresh and ready for the morning. Megalopolis was supposed to be a short stop, but Prof. Christesen, Mike, and Chris found a recently excavated stoa on the site that turned out to be fairly engaging, so a half hour stop turned into a full hour of columns and pottery sherds. With Megalopolis behind us, we next traveled up into the hills again and found the Sanctuary of Despoina and Demeter at Lykosauros. We spent four hours there measuring and drawing the temple and the environs in order to produce a plan of the site and an elevation of the temple (both to scale- of course). We all tramped back onto the bus around 4:30 and headed to Olympia for a pleasantly surprising hotel (somehow we managed to get upgraded to an A-class hotel), where we'll be staying for two nights.
