Map for Week 2

30 March: Leslie and Melissa Reporting: The morning began on the boat at 6am, with a loud knock on the door by crew members, talking (yelling?) to us in loud, impatient Greek – it seemed none of us knew that Crete was an hour ahead of the mainland and we were supposed to have been off the boat 15 minutes before. After that brilliant start, we gathered outside the harbor at the “trash heap”, otherwise known as the bus station. Being the leaders, we were able to delegate responsibilities and broke the group up into four groups, assigning each group to a quarter of Herakleion to search for a suitable hotel. We then began the long and arduous task of watching over the bags and eating breakfast while our classmates searched the city for a place to stay. Once they had all returned and pitched their favorite hotels, we decided on the Hotel Kastro and hiked across the city. We weren’t able to check in for a few more hours and so went to the illustrious Mac Duck for food before heading to the Archaeological Museum for the day’s lecture. En route to the museum, we discovered that the maps provided in our guidebooks were not very helpful – in fact, they were the very opposite of helpful. We did manage to find the museum, however, and spent 3 hours going over a few thousand years of Minoan art. After admiring the frescoes from the Knossos palace and making a few jokes about Sir Arthur Evans (best not to ask), we had the privilege of taking a quiz, an experience quite alien to us. We were free to leave after finishing the quiz and so most of us headed back to the hotel to check in. The afternoon was ours and spent exploring, sleeping (some of us, *ahem* Leslie, took this last activity very seriously and haven’t stirred for quite some time), eating and, in several cases, getting lost (often multiple times). As for now, the consensus seems to be that tomorrow will be wholly dedicated to the beach…
