Map for Week 2

29 March: Sarah Jones and Randy Reporting: Another day, another Acropolis journey. Due to some last-minute rescheduling, we had an extra half hour before the day began in order to pack up and check out, and then we trekked up the now-familiar route along with 3 dogs who decided to join us. After a quick lecture on the minor buildings of the Classical Acropolis, we were joined by Dr. Schultz, fresh from his dissertation defense. First he talked to us about the temple of Athena Nike, on which he has done an obscene amount of work, and then we got to jump the ropes and listen to his lecture of the Propylaia in one of its side rooms (the Pinakotheke or picture gallery). Pushing ever onward, we discussed the function of the Parthenon, and then by waving our permit and doing some fast talking we were able to actually go inside the Parthenon, which was an amazing opportunity hardly ever granted to anybody. Reinvigorated, we examined the frieze and parapet of the Athena Nike temple in the Acropolis museum before we dispersed and spent the afternoon tying up loose ends, going to the Virgin Megastore, etc. Evan, flawlessly posing as a Canadian, took advantage of the anti-war protest in the Syntagma Square to gather film and pictures (“They were like, ‘Yeah, you should convince them to end the war,’ and I was like ‘Yah--America sucks.’”) After a quick introductory lecture to the Iliad we hopped on the metro and dodged heavy traffic at the Piraeus to get to our boat to Crete, from which the leaders are speaking to you now. Tomorrow we disembark at 6 am, which should be painful, but our day was excellent and we’ve picked our new leaders, so that’s their problem now--peace out.
