21 March: Randy Lynn and Ana•s Wheeler Reporting: After 2 warm, sunny days, we awoke to find that London had finally lived up to its cold and cloudy reputation. Nevertheless, it was a refreshingly late 10 am start, and it began with another lecture by Dr. Williams in the British Museum. His topic: the Parthenon. He talked extensively about the BMâs collection, which includes parts of the pediments, the metopes, and most of the frieze, with particular emphasis on the history of the BMâs collection. His hour and a half presentation was followed by a leisurely lunch break, which the superlatively talented leaders spent taking pictures of our accommodations, eating chocolate, and laughing at Chris trying to work his current converter. Afterwards, we were met at the BM by Dr. Peter Higgs, Curator of Greek Sculpture at the British Museum. He took us to a special room which contained the entire frieze from the temple of Apollo at Bassae, and then to the exhibit on the Nereid Monument, at which we spent some time comparing and contrasting the different sculptorsâ styles on the metopes. After a short break, we wound up our day examining the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. We spent two and a half hours grabbing dinner on our own before congregating in our hostel lobby and trekking off to the Royal Academy of Fine Artsâ production of Antigone. At the play, some of the fine productionâs thunder was stolen by our celebrity sighting of Alan Rickman (Die Hard, Harry Potter, Dogma, and other classics). After the superb play, Ani and Leslie finally discovered the ability to ask for his autograph, which they received, and we all returned to the hostel to spend the evening in various ways. At the end of this sentence, Randy and Anais will have relinquished their leadership duties÷so till next time, cheerio.
