Basically, I just want to impart some pearls of wisdom to trip prospects and maybe a few words to fellow FSPers.
For those thinking about coming on the FSP, some advice: it is difficult. The first few weeks are very tough on the body, but eventually the frame pack is easily lifted and carried for miles on end. The trip is intellectually difficult as well, with quizzes, lots and lots of quizzes. But it’s worth it. It is definitely, definitely worth it. At the end of the day all the scratches and bug bits seem like glorious war wounds. “Yes, I did climb 5 km up a mountain to look at a rock that just may have held some importance 4,000 years ago.” The experience of actually seeing places you’ve only read about or seen slides of is incredible. When you stand in a temple (which is illegal, but only if the guard catches you), the Greek world and way of life becomes so much more tangible than reading about in Pomeroy. Although it is challenging, there really is nothing that compares to the thrill of hiking a mountain and taking a quiz thousands of feet in the air.
For my fellow FSPers, you all made the trip even better. Even though there were days (weeks?) where we wanted to kill each other I’m sure, we all managed to survive to the end, mostly through our mutual complaining about quizzes and ISPs. And always remember, party at Liz and Leslie’s this summer.
