I really didn't know what Greece would be like before I came here. I had only taken a few Classics courses before coming here, and as one might guess, these dealt with ancient Greece, not the modern country. I have found places in Greece that I would never want to leave and others in which I would never want to spend another minute. My ISP project dealt with depictions of the Greek landscape and issues of idealizing the past and marginalizing the present as well as ignoring the past and promoting the present. It was interesting to travel around Greece and see the land and ruins while studying works of art that show how artists and people in general perceived the same places and artifacts so long ago. I can understand how easy it would be to idealize these places, for they are amazing in many ways, and yet the poverty in various areas is also readily apparent. I eagerly look forward to developing my some 35 rolls of film and seeing how I captured Greece.
