Chris

I came to Greece not really expecting anything. People I know who have been here before would try to talk to me about it, but I would cut them off before they could start telling me what to expect. I wanted to find out for myself what Greece could hold for me.

In Greece I found a welcome break from Dartmouth life and campus. I had been there entirely too long and it was time for a change.

The country of Greece still astounds me. The countryside itself is fantastically beautiful. The sites we went to, from the Bronze Age sites in Crete, the Peloponnese, and Akrotiri to the Classical and Hellenistic cities, sanctuaries, and temples, all are etched in my mind today as if I had just been there an hour ago. But what I find most striking is the mixture of the past and the present in the country. 10 million people here have mobile phones; Audis, BMW's, etc. are prevalent in every city and town; and in Athens, the Acropolis is visible through the smog and the eight-story buildings that fill the Attic plain. This trip exposed me to more than just the archaeological sites and the museums, and that, I think, is the thing that I will carry with me longer than anything else from the three months spent here.
