This week you will study the mechanism of ligand exchange between your complex, Co(NH3)5H2O3+, and the nitrite ion, NO2–. The reaction will be followed colorimetrically, and the rates of ligand exchange and ligand isomerization will be measured. Key Questions Which linkage isomer forms first and which forms subsequently? How do you know? Why are pseudo first-order reaction conditions used? Why should one isomer be kinetically favored and the other thermodynamically favored? What clues can the mechanism provide for deciding which isomer is which? What clues can the bonding of each isomer provide? | |||||||||||||||
