Goals
In this experiment, you will study the reaction between your cobalt complex and the nitrite ion, NO2-. The nitrite ion can exchange with the water ligand of [Co(NH3)5(H2O)]3+ and the mechanism of this ligand exchange will be investigated.

Key questions
Here are some questions to think about before, during, and after this week's experiment.

Why is the absorbance monitored at 500 nm?

Which would you expect to be faster, the formation of the nitro or nitrito linkage? Which isomer would you expect to be more stable?

What additional experiments could be done to further ellucidate the ligand exchange reaction mechanism?
