Prelab Problems

1. For the region of the spectra shown in the Figure, what is the max, or wavelength of maximum absorbance for the three complex ions, [Co(NH3)5(H2O)]3+, [Co(NH3)5(ONO)]2+, and [Co(NH3)5(NO2)]2+ ? What color of light does each max correspond to? What color will a solution of each complex ion appear? You can use the Spectrum applet to answer this question. You might also find the diagram of the visible spectrum on p. 526 and the color wheel on p. 616 of your textbook to be helpful in answering this.

2. Draw a graph showing absorbance at 500 nm vs. time for each of the two possible mechanisms.
