Acids and Bases
Use care in handling solutions of NaOH and HCl. Rinse any spills on skin with cold water. Clean up any bench top spills immediately to avoid accidental exposure. Wear gloves. Gloves provide a temporary layer of protection. If gloves become discolored or develop holes, remove them, wash your hands, and get a new pair.

Eye Protection
Goggles must be worn at all times in the laboratory. Do not remove them until you leave the room.

Burns
The oven used for the analysis of the water ligand is at 110 °C. Use tongs, not fingers, to take hot beakers out of the oven.

Fumes
Solid and solutions containing thiocyanate ion can decompose to produce hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. Keep the bottles of solid NH4SCN tightly capped and solutions covered. Rinse all glassware that contained these solutions, immediately after use.

Waste Disposal
Reaction mixtures and cobalt-containing solutions and solvents should be placed in the labeled waste drums. Unused acid and base solutions can be flushed down the drain with lots of water.
