Prelab Problems
1. Under what circumstances is an exothermic reaction non-spontaneous? Under what circumstances is an endothermic reaction spontaneous? Can temperature affect the spontaneity of an endothermic reaction? How?

2. Calculate the H for the dissolution reaction of each of the five salts available in the laboratory, using the thermodynamic data given on the In Your Write-up page. Organize your results in a table.

3. The heat of solution of sodium chloride is 3.88 kJ/mole. How many grams of NaCl will be required to cause the temperature of a calorimeter with the heat capacity you determined last week to change by 3 degrees celsius? Will the temperature increase or decrease? Remember to keep track of units in your calculation. You can easily calculate the formula weight of NaCl using the molecular mass calculator in the periodic table, elsewhere on the site.
