My Research

As an aquatic environmental scientist, I seek scientific solutions to sustain the quality of our freshwater resources while meeting the needs of a growing global population and the problems associated with human induced changes in the environment. To address these complex problems I work within a strong, multidisciplinary team of scientists comprising ecologists, analytical chemists, earth scientists, statisticians, and molecular biologists. Current research in my lab focuses on:

1. Accumulation and Biomagnification of Metals (mercury, arsenic, cadmium and zinc)
2. Environment-Gene Responses Underlying Metal Bioaccumulation and Toxicity
3. Restoration of Atlantic Salmon

These topics rely on fundamental scientific research to understand biological mechanisms underlying environmental problems and to discover solutions to them. I take great pleasure and benefit greatly from my collaborations on these projects with graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral and other professional colleagues from a variety of disciplines. Our work generally starts with an examination of patterns occurring in the field, and relies on experimental, analytical and modeling approaches to answer specific questions. We are also very involved in the development of novel methods using stable isotopes, new mathematical tools and applied genomics to solve specific problems. While the scope of these projects is broad, each starts from an understanding at the genomic, individual or population level to answer questions at the community and ecosystem level.
