CLASS DIVIDE: 2007-2008
 
 
In partnership with the Hopkins Center, The Dartmouth Centers Forum chose the theme “Class Divide” for campus discussion during the 2007-08 academic year. The Centers organized talks, seminars, symposia, and discussions to accompany a series of events on this theme planned by the Hopkins Center. The Hopkins Center for the Arts will be continuing this theme throughout the course of the next year with programming of their own. Events offered by the DCF: February 25, 2008: Working for Change. Barbara Ehrenreich. The Dartmouth Centers Forum was pleased to sponsor the award winning journalist Barbara Ehrenreich to campus. Ms. Ehrenreich has written on a wide range of issues, from the military to feminism, to economic injustice. She is the author of such books as Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America and Bait and Switch. See the article in The Dartmouth for a summary of the event. October 18, 2007: The Working Poor: Invisible In America. David K. Shipler, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author and Former Foreign Correspondent of The New York Times. His latest book, The Working Poor: Invisible in America, was a national best-seller in 2004 and 2005. It was a finalist for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award and the New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Award. It won an Outstanding Book Award from The Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights at Simmons College and led to his receipt of awards from the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, the New York Labor Communications Council, and the D.C. In this fascinating chronicle of what happens when a man admits a long-buried secret to his family and friends, a seemingly average professor and father reveals how on one night in 1955, as an unassuming Swarthmore College student, he killed his sleeping dorm mate. The story of how the death of a student at Union Seminary is met and mourned and interpreted by a multifaith community. For an article on this screening see The Dartmouth. February 4, 2008. Family Name. Macky Alston’s award-winning film chronicles the surprising twists and turns of his search for the descendants of the slaves and slave owners who lived on the plantations once owned by his family. People Like Us: Social Class in America. A documentary film exploring the meanings and experiences of social class in the United States, including a segment on controversy in nearby Burlington, VT. The film was followed by a question and answer session with the producers Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker. Sponsored by the Department of Sociology. January 27, 2008. Class in the Upper Valley: A Community Panel. This panel explored the issue of class in the Upper Valley from the perspectives of community members whose professional and personal backgrounds provide a unique lens on this complex subject.
