FINE PRINT:

When sorting on the FACStar Plus or Aria, we add one (for a non-sterile sort) or two (for a sterile sort) extra hours to account for instrument set-up time before sorting.

Analysis time is free. The lab has a computing area with Macintosh/Silicon Graphics/PC workstations. If you want to use a computer attached to a microscope or cytometer, acquisition of new data on the instruments has priority. For this reason, analysis time on computers attached to the instruments cannot be reserved in advance.

Booking schedules are near the instruments. Users are charged for time used and for time booked (even if it has not been used). Cancelled time will be charged unless it is cancelled 24 hours in advance and the cancellation has been confirmed with lab personnel. Users of the FACStar Plus or Aria need to confirm with Gary Ward about his availability for operation of the instrument before booking.

The sign-up books for the instruments are used to reserve time, as accounting records for billing purposes, and also for communication between users (eg. Do I need to shut down the instrument or is someone following me at midnight? Will someone have five minutes to spare sometime during the day?). For all these reasons, sign up legibly (first and last name, PI's name, account number, and telephone extension).

It is expected that users will be trained to run the FACScan, the LSC, and the imaging microscopes and will then use those instruments without direct supervision. Training sessions and help for new users are provided free of charge. If a user wants Cell Lab staff to run samples on these instruments, there will be an additional fee of $30/hr. Users are not allowed to operate the FACStar and Aria and there is, therefore, no extra charge for Gary Ward’s operation of that instrument.

The lab welcomes the opportunity to collaborate in development of new methodologies; there is no charge for development work or feasibility studies.

*Use of the Cell Analysis Shared Service is subsidized by the NCI Cancer Center Core Grant. This subsidy amounts to approximately one third of our actual running costs.

**Outside academic rates are based on 1.62 times (for college overheads) the estimated actual running costs (without Cancer Center subsidy).
