Below is a list of reports and memoranda that
the EPA and the CAG has issued related to the Elizabeth Mine. The
reports are displayed in reverse chronological order with the most
recent files on top. Hard copies of the reports are located in the
Norwich, Vermont library and the Strafford Town Office.
Most
of the EPA reports are in the Adobe .pdf format. You will need Adobe

EE/CA: Drafting, Amendments and Reviews
The Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA)
was the product of extensive disussion between the EPA and it's
consultants ANR and the community groups that are represented in
the EMCAG. The following series of documents represent the various
amendments and recommendations that have influenced this collaborative
effort.

based on information from the EPA provides estimates for the volume
of truck traffic that

process.
Why
do some passive treatment systems fail while others work? - This
technical paper by James J. Gusek, P.E. explains the design and technological
factors affecting the successful implimentation of passive treatment
systems such as those planned for use in the Elizabeth Mine Site.

EPA letter regarding
TP-1 stability concerns (March 19, 2003)
Recent
work by the United Statee Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) indicates that there is the potential
for the large tailing
pile
(a pile of processed rock often
referred to as "TP-1")
at the Elizabeth Mine Superfund
Site to release a tailing flood wave (a large mudslide)
that could
threaten low lying
areas
of the
West Branch of the Ompompanoosuc
River. EPA has sent letters to notify those individuals
living in homes
that have been
identified as being within the
impact zone. EPA will be presenting more
information
regarding this matter at the EMCAG
meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m. at
Barrett Hall in South
Strafford.

Proposed
Cleanup Fact Sheet (March 2002)
This fact sheet summarizes the
proposed cleanup under the removal program.
Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis ( March 2002)
EMCAG EPA/ANR Status Update ( December
2001)
Summary of Preliminary Ecological
and Human Health Risk Evaluations (July 2001)
This summary provides an evaluation
of the impacts to human and ecological receptors (primarily fish
and other
aquatic organisms) as a result of the release of Acid Mine Drainage
from the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford and Thetford, VT. This report
contains preliminary risk assessment findings presented as supporting
information for the Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis
(EE/CA)
Report.
EPA Update for the EMCAG (October 24, 2001)
This report summarizes the cleanup options
under considerations by the EMCAG and the EPA in October 2001 and
details how some concepts are being reworked due to EMCAG concerns.
Historical Context and
Preliminary Resource Evaluation of the Elizabeth Mine, South
Strafford, Orange County, Vermont (May 2001)
This
report presents archival research
and supplemental information in support of the "Statement of Limits,
National Register Eligibility, and Potential Resources in the Proposed
APE, Elizabeth Mine, South Strafford, Vermont",
released in October 2000. This
report was generated to respond
to
comments
made
by the Vermont State Historic Preservation
Office, the community and other
commentators.
Environmental
Response Alternatives Analysis Report (April 2001)
This report was prepared as a basis for a dialogue
about cleanup alternatives at the Elizabeth Mine and is intended
to provide the Elizabeth Mine Community Advisory Group and other
stakeholders an opportunity to participate in the evaluation of
cleanup alternatives. The EPA will incorporate comments on this
report into a draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA).
Elizabeth Mine Site Conditions
Report (February
2001)
This report summarizes the activities undertaken
by the EPA in the year 2000 to evaluate the surface and subsurface
features and conditions related to the Elizabeth Mine Site.
Conceptual
Model of Tailings Piles at the Elizabeth Mine, South Strafford,
VT
(November 2000)
This report summarizes the efforts to date
to develop an understanding of the surface and subsurface features
of mine tailings piles at the Elizabeth Mine. The intent of this
document is to provide an overview of the tailings piles in a multidimensional
view and establish base models for the surface water runoff and
infiltration, groundwater flow, as well as the geotechnical stability
of the tailings piles. Previous and ongoing studies have demonstrated
that the tailings are a source of metals and acidity to Copperas
Brook and the Ompomponoosuc River.
Elizabeth Mine Site Summary
Report (October
2000)

and environmental information relating to the Elizabeth Mine Site.
