Final Project, Bio 4, 05S

---> Due Tuesday, May 31, in class <---

Rules:

In compliance with the Dartmouth honor principle, all the work you hand in on this exam is to be your own.

Your answer should be a maximum of 6 printed pages (this is a limit not a goal) -- anything beyond six pages will be ignored. A page is defined as an 8.5" x 11" sheet with one inch margins. The font should be 12 point Times and text should be double spaced. The bibliography (and any figures you might have) should be at the end of the paper and will not count towards the page limit. You can cite references in the body of the text using numbers.

This exam is open book. You can use your notes, the web, the library, newspapers, etc. You cannot talk to others about your answer, though -- the work you hand in must be entirely your own.

There is a defined format to be followed for the paper.

Good luck.

Question:

You have graduated from Dartmouth, have landed a good job, and settled into a family life in your dream community. You have two children who take a schoolbus each day driven by a woman named Nadia, who your kids and their friends really like. She treats them nicely, buys them little gifts at Christmas time, and lets them sing on the bus. The school board has instituted a new policy demanding that all school system employees have extensive annual physicals, including genetic testing. Unfortunately for Nadia, it turns out she has an allele of a gene that gives her a 15-fold higher likelihood of having a stroke (let's say the likelihood of her having a stroke has risen from 1% to 15% in the next 5 years). The local parents' association somehow finds out about this supposedly confidential information and some parents are demanding that Nadia be fired from her job, saying that it is unsafe for her to be driving their children to school. Other parents say that she has worked with their children for a decade and has an exemplary record.

Discuss some of the issues involved in this case. Nadia has not done anything wrong. Can she be fired? Does the school board have the need to protect its children? its employees? Is this different from hiring a NEW driver and having the test be part of the hiring procedure? Should Nadia be transferred to some other job in the school system, for example an office job? Please address these kinds of questions and any others you think are relevant.
