Inpatient Services

Inpatient Services at DHMC Cardiology include the Coronary Care Unit(CCU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), and the Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU).

Coronary Care Unit and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care UnitThis combined unit, expandable to accomodate 18 patients, is prepared to deal with the the most complex of cardiac illness, including patients with acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, complex arrhythmias, and those immediately recovering from heart surgery.

Available technologies include:

  • Hemodynamic monitoring including intra-arterial and pulmonary artery catheterization
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump support
  • ABIOMED Biventricular Support System
  • Continuous veno-venous hemofiltration
  • In-room fluroscopy
  • Bedside cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography)

In addition to the services and technologies available directly in the unit, patient safety and outcomes supplemented with in-house availability of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Electrophysiology Lab, and cardiothoracic surgery capabilities.

Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU)

As the backbone of inpatient Cardiac Services at DHMC, the ICCU combines a highly trained nursing staff, cutting edge diagnositic and therapeutic technologies, and the latest in modern pharmaceuticals. The unit consists of 36 beds of which 22 are private and 14 are semi-private.

Assuring safe and steady recovery from suspected or known cardiac illness, the ICCU brings to the patient:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support trained nurses
  • 24 hour physician coverage
  • In-house availability of Cath Lab, EP Lab, and Cardiac Surgery
  • Continuous rhythm monitoring using a Siemens Infinity Telemetry System
  • On-unit presence of pharmacologist
  • Inpatient cardiac rehabilitation
  • Post-surgery support and education classes
  • Dedicated recovery unit for patients recovering from percutaneous cardiac interventions
