The echocardiography laboratory at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center was established in 1972 and performs over 10,000 cardiac ultrasound examinations per year. The lab performs both outpatient and in-patient adult, pediatric and fetal echocardiograms utilizing state of the art equipment. A full range of echo services is available. transthoracic, transesophageal, stress and intraoperative echocardiograms are routinely performed by our staff to enhance patient care. Approximately 80% of the echocardiograms done in the lab are adult studies. Mobile echo services are performed at multiple community hospitals in our referral area. The DHMC echo lab was one of the first in New England to be accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Echocardiography Labs (ICAEL) in 1999 and it has just received renewal of this accreditation for the next three years. Accreditation status signifies that the echocardiography laboratory at DHMC has met the standards of an independent review agency which evaluates the quality of critical elements of the echo process including: interpretive and technical abilities of the sonographers and physicians working in the lab and diagnostic accuracy of the examinations.
