Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center
Heart Failure continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in adults: it affects five million patients every year in the United States. Evidence based therapies have been shown to improve clinical outcomes and there is a critical need for physicians and nurses to understand both standard and emerging therapies as well as develop strategies of care delivery to help better manage this complex disease.
Our 4th Annual Dartmouth Conference on Heart Failure: “Exploring New Frontiers in Treatment and Management” was held at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH on Monday, May 19, 2008. This year we had distinguished physician and nursing faculty who focused on new and emerging therapies in the treatment and management of heart failure. A range of topics was covered, including a review of our understanding of heart failure pathophysiology, diastolic heart failure diagnosis and management, optimizing the care of the patient and the use of devices, and the growing fields of cell and gene therapy, mechanical support devices, and pharmacogenomics. There was ample time for discussion. Break-out work sessions were designed to focus on the more practical aspects of heart failure management for physicians and nurses.
It is important for physicians to understand not only pathophysiology and evidence based therapy, but also the need to partner with non-physician health care providers to help deliver effective care. The complexity of heart failure diagnosis and management makes it a perfect prototypical chronic disease for a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach.
The multidisciplinary program was useful to interest to cardiologists, internists,
hospitalists, emergency room physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and
nurses involved in the care of heart failure patients.
